NEBOSH stands for, the National Examination Board for Occupational Safety and Health, they’re highly valued by employers and the majority of health and safety roles require a NEBOSH qualification.

What kind of people take the NEBOSH National General Certificate?

The NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management is designed for people who have fire safety responsibilities at work. It provides the knowledge and understanding, when combined with relevant experience, to carry out an effective fire risk assessment, as well as embed good practice in the workplace.

What is covered in the qualification?

The NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management covers the following key topics:

  • Managing health and safety
  • Managing fire safety
  • Principles of fire and explosion
  • Causes and prevention of fires and explosions
  • Fire protection in buildings
  • Safety of people in the event of fire
  • Fire safety risk assessment

Learners will be able to complete a fire safety risk assessment of a workplace. In particular, to:

  • Identify fire hazards in the workplace
  • Identify people who could be at risk should a fire start
  • Assess the adequacy of existing fire safety measures to control risk
  • Assess the risk of fire occurring
  • Assess the speed at which fire and smoke could spread once started
  • Assess the risk to people from fire
  • Where necessary, recommend additional fire safety measures to further reduce risk

No previous health and safety or fire safety knowledge is required.

The qualification is divided into two units:

  • FC1: Fire Safety and Risk Management
  • FC2: Practical Fire Risk Assessment

Cost – £895.00 + VAT per person – price includes course, exam registration and revision day

Entry Requirements – There are no specific barriers, in terms of academic qualifications, skills or experience to entry to the NEBOSH National General Certificate programme.  However, it should be noted that currently the assessments are offered, and must be answered, in English only.  The qualification includes a requirement to write a short report based on the candidate’s own workplace, which must also be in English.

Minimum standard of English required for candidates – The standard of English required by candidates studying for the NEBOSH National General Certificate must be such that they can both understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus.  NEBOSH recommends that candidates undertaking this qualification should reach a minimum standard of English equivalent to an International Language Testing System score of 6.0 or higher in IELTS in order to be accepted onto a National General Certificate programme.
