1 Day IOSH Safety, Health and Environment for Construction Site Workers Course in North East England

Course Content
The learner will understand:
– the unique health and safety issues to be managed in the construction industry to protect employees, contractors,
neighbours and others
– aspects of successful health and safety management
Local Law and Enforcement
The learner will understand:
– the basics of local law
– the legal duties of the employer and employees in the prevention of accidents
– their own responsibilities towards self and others.
– the importance and features of a health and safety policy
– the provisions of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 – UK or local equivalent / ILO Code of
Practice – Safety and Health in Construction.
General Site Safety
The learner will understand:
– the importance of risk assessments and method statements and the development process.
– PPE / RPE requirements
– typical signage and its significance
– site requirements for the welfare of construction workers on site
– the importance of segregating vehicles and pedestrians and maintaining a safe site
– the general hazards and risks related to work equipment, including mobile plant and machinery, and methods of control
– key site first-aid requirements
– fire hazards and methods of control
– the basics of accident prevention and reporting.
High-risk Activities
The learner will understand:
– hazards and controls associated with the management of lifting operations
– hazards and controls associated with excavations
– control and management of confined spaces
– hazards and controls associated with overhead and underground services
– hazards and controls associated with working at height, including:
– plans and risk assessments
– roofs and fragile surfaces
– common access equipment
– working platforms and ladders
– management, use and stability of scaffolds
– fall arrest and suspension equipment
– hazards and controls associated with mobile, lone and out-of-hours work.
Health
The learner will understand:
– why a healthy workforce is important and the procedures that need to be put into place to achieve this
– hazards, risk and control of asbestos
– hazards, risk and control of lead
– hazards, risk and control of vibration
– hazards, risk and control of noise
– hazards, risk and control of manual handling activities
– the basic legal framework and management of hazardous substances. This will include:
– general chemicals
– silica
– airborne substances
– the issues around alcohol and drugs and common control strategies
