Course Aims and Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide training for individuals who wish to drive a Skip handler at a competent level.

 

Accreditation

On successful completion, the candidates will receive a Northern Safety Accredited certificate.

 

Content

  • Identify the basic construction, purpose and function of components and the purpose and use of controls and gauges
  • Identify and comply with manufacturers’ instructions in accordance with the operator’s handbook, other information sources and applicable legislation
  • Carry out pre-checks
  • Set the vehicle for site and road travel
  • Travel over differing types of terrain, including rough, undulating ground, both in a loaded and unloaded state
  • Manoeuvre the vehicle in confined areas using forward and reverse direction, in a loaded and unloaded state
  • Explain precautions to be taken for overhead services and other hazards
  • Position the vehicle to pick up and place skip/ containers, including areas having height restrictions
  • Pick up and place skips/containers of various sizes and weights
  • Discharge a loaded skip/container
  • Ensure load integrity and security including by sheeting/netting or other appropriate securing
  • Place the vehicle in an out-of-service position

 

Maximum Numbers

A maximum number of 6 people can be trained at one time.

 

Venue

The training can be carried out on any site, providing the following equipment is available:

  • Serviceable skip handler that meets current legislation, with the operator’ manuel
  • An area of ground, having areas suitable for placing loaded skips or bodies and uneven terrain. The ground must be able to accept tipped loads.
  • Fully loaded and empty skips or bodies
