Course Aims and Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide training for individuals who wish to drive a Skid Steer Loader at a competent level.

 

Accreditation

On successful completion, the candidates will receive a Northern Safety Accredited certificate.

 

Content

  • Identify the basic construction, purpose and function of components and the purpose and use of controls and gauges
  • Identify and comply with manufacturers’ instructions in accordance with the operator’s handbook, other information sources and applicable legislation
  • Carry out pre-checks
  • Set the skid steer for site travel
  • Travel over differing types of terrain
  • Travel the skid steer up and down substantial incline
  • Manoeuvre in confined areas using forward and reverse direction
  • Explain precautions to be taken for underground and overhead services and other hazards
  • Form Stockpiles and ramps of various materials
  • Load various types of materials in to receptacles
  • Clean and level different materials
  • Place the skid steer loader in an out-of-service condition
  • Explain the loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter

 

Maximum Numbers

A maximum number of 6 people can be trained at one time.

 

Venue

The training can be carried out on any site, providing the following equipment is available:

  • Serviceable skid steer that meets current legislation with the operator’s manual
  • A vehicle for loading into
  • A bank or mound of material which can be excavated
  • An area of ground, clear of hazards which must include:
    • Uneven, rough terrain
    • A slope not less than 18%
A straight run of at least 10 metres in length
