Risk & CoSHH Assessments

Risk Assessments

At Northern Safety Ltd we assist businesses with their legal obligations to ensure suitable and sufficient risk assessments are in place for all hazardous workplace tasks, while providing advice and support on implementing effective control measures to eliminate or substitute the risk.

What is a Risk Assessment?

A risk assessment is a thorough look at your workplace processes that may cause harm, particularly to people.  It is a method of identifying hazards and risk factors that have potential to cause harm.  Analyzing and evaluating the risk associated with the hazard and determine appropriate ways to eliminate or substitute the hazard.

Risk is the chance or probability that a person who is exposed to a hazard is harmed or experiences adverse health effects.

Hazard is anything with the potential to cause harm.

All aspects of the organisation must be covered by the risk assessment process.

Legal Aspects of a Risk Assessment

The Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations require every employer and self-employed person to make a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to the health & safety of his employees whilst at work, and the risks to others not in their employment who may be effected by their undertakings.   In addition where the employer employs five or more employees (including part-time staff) then the findings of the risk assessment must be recorded.  Any risk assessment shall be subject to a review if there is an accident and / or a significant change taken has taken place.

Five Steps to Risk Assessment

  1. Identify the hazard
  2. Decide who might be harmed and how
  3. Evaluate the risks
  4. Record significant findings
  5. Review the assessment & update if necessary
