- Identify and comply with manufacturers’ instructions in accordance with the operator’s handbook, other information sources and applicable legislation
- Carry out pre-checks
- Set the roller for site travel
- Travel over differing types of terrain, including undulating ground
- Manoeuvre in confined areas using forward and reverse direction
- Set the roller for compaction duties
- Prepare an area prior to compacting, i.e. traffic/ personnel management etc.
- Compact different materials to given instructions
- Compact up to supported and unsupported edges
- Compact against radii
- Compact around obstructions
- Place the roller in an out-of-service condition
- Recognise compacted and uncompacted areas
- State conditions that may cause instability of the roller
- State safety procedures when working up to a supported edge
- Explain safety procedures when working up to unsupported edges
- Explain safety procedures when compacting on inclines
- Explain the loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter
Maximum Numbers
A maximum number of 6 people can be trained at one time.
Venue
The training can be carried out on any site, providing the following equipment is available:
- Serviceable ride-on roller that meets current legislation, with the operator’s manual
- A working area having a straight run of not less than 15 metres in length with an uncompacted area of at least 12 metres. The remaining 3 metres may contain a hard standing, and:
- A supported edge on one side and an unsupported edge on the other. The area must be a minimum of 3 x the drum width of the roller
Or
-
- An unsupported edge 1.5 x the width of the roller, and a supported edge 1.5 x the width of the roller, which may be in a different area
A working area containing a radius of between 5 and 10 metres. The edge of the radius must be supported. The compactable area must be a minimum of 3 x the drum width
- A material able to be compacted, which can highlight operating errors (i.e. on overlaps and direction changes)
- An object i.e. road cone simulating an obstruction, stuated centrally on the uncompacted area of, or one of, the straight run(s)
- An area of driving, containing undulating ground and slight gradients
