Pat Testing
Pat, or portable appliance testing, is an important part of any health & safety policy.
The HSE states that 25% of all reportable electrical accidents involve portable appliances. The Electricity at Work Regulations place a legal responsibility on employers, employees and self-employed persons to comply with the provisions of the regulations and take reasonably practicable steps to ensure that no danger results from the use of such equipment.
Northern Safety uses the latest computerised PAT testing equipment and can test all portable appliances in the four test situations identified by the IEE Code of Practice:
- Type Testing to an appropriate standard
- Production testing
- In-Service testing
- Testing after repair
HAV Assessment
Northern Safety Ltd can offer assistance in the assessment of hand arm vibration exposure levels and evaluating the risks without undertaking actual monitoring. Hand Arm Vibration (HAV) exposure is measured in accordance with the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005.
Where monitoring is necessary, then we offer state of the art vibration measurements to determine vibration magnitudes transferred from the hand tool to the hand. From the information gathered we can ascertain usage times and the effects of combined tool use.
RRO Assessments
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 for England and Wales (commonly known as the RRO) came into force on April 1, 2006, making employers ultimately responsible for their site fire prevention and safety of staff.
The Order applies to virtually all premises and covers nearly every type of building, structure and open spaces put to certain uses:
- Offices and shops
- Premises that provide care
- The common areas of houses in multiple occupation
- Pubs, clubs, restaurants, shopping centres and other places of assembly
- Theatres and cinemas
- Educational premises
- Healthcare premises
- Tents and marquees
- Hotels and hostels
- Factories and warehouses
- Open air public gatherings (concerts, shows etc)
- Transport network
- Community centres and village halls
- Churches and other places of religious worship
The whole weight of the RRO is upon the 'responsible' person at a company, in other words the buck stops with the employer. This person can authorise others to work on their behalf but he/she cannot delegate the responsibility.

Noise Assessments
The new Noise at Work Regulations 2005 requires employers to carry out a noise risk assessment where any employee is likely to be exposed to noise at or above the lower exposure action. Its aim is to reduce the incidence and severity of hearing loss resulting from excessive noise exposure in workplaces.
Noise monitoring, assessments and surveys are required for a huge range of workplace activities, from engineering works to light manufacturing and even office-style environments - but in most cases simple safeguards and working practices can resolve any potential problems.
What Northern Safety provides:
- Comprehensive noise survey and assessment
- Advice on noise control measures and hearing protection requirements
- A management program to address compliance with all aspects of the new regulations and good practice
- Training of staff in noise awareness and noise surveying are arranged and delivered to suit your specific needs
