Course Aims and Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide training for individuals who wish to drive a Lorry loader at a
competent level.

Accreditation

On successful completion, the candidates will receive a Northern Safety Accredited certificate.

Content

• Identify the basic construction, purpose and function of components and the purpose and
use of controls and gauges
• Identify and comply with manufacturers’ instructions in accordance with the operator’s
handbook, other information sources and applicable legislation
• Configure the lorry loader and carrier vehicle for site and road travel
• Manoeuvre the carrier vehicle into position in order to carry out the lifting of various loads
• Set up carrier vehicle to carry out lifts from minimum to maximum radius
• Select, check and use correct lifting gear for the lifting of various loads
• Lift and place loads at varying radii
• Load a vehicle in accordance with industry practices
• Secure various loads on the vehicle bed in accordance with industry practices
• Explain precautions to be taken for underground and overhead services and other
hazards

Maximum Numbers

A maximum number of 6 people can be trained at one time.

Venue

The training can be carried out on any site, providing the following equipment is available:
• Serviceable lorry loader that meets current legislation with the operator’s manuals for
the loader and vehicles.
• The loader must be equipped with one of the following attachments:
o hook
o clamshell bucket
o hydraulically-operated clamp
• A selection of loads to be placed onto and off the vehicle
• Suitable certificated lifting accessories (hook use)
• A measuring tape of sufficient length, able to measure the maximum radius of the
loader
• An area which must contain level firm ground
