On successful completion, the candidates will receive a Northern Safety Accredited certificate.

Course Aims and Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide training for individuals who wish to drive a 180 Excavator (Crawler and
Wheeled) at a competent level.

Content

• Identify the basic construction, purpose and function of components and the purpose and use of
controls and gauges
• Identify and comply with manufacturers’ instructions in accordance with the operator’s handbook,
other information sources and applicable legislation
• Carry out pre-checks
• Set the dozer for site travel
• Travel over different types of terrain, including rough undulating ground
• Travel up and down substantial inclines
• Manoeuvre in confined areas using forward and reverse direction
• Explain precautions to be taken for underground services and other hazards
• Form different sizes of stockpiles by cutting below ground level
• Cut, side-cast and spread material using the blade at an angle
• Spread and level stockpiles to specification
• Place the dozer in and out-of-service condition
• Explain the loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter

Maximum Numbers

A maximum number of 6 people can be trained at one time.

Venue

The training can be carried out on any site, providing the following equipment is available:
• Serviceable crawler dozer that meets current legislation, fitted with a straight blade having a tilt
facility, with the oporator’s manuel.
• An area of ground, clear of hazards which must include:
o Uneven rough terrain
o A slope not less than 10% (1:5.5) incline having sufficient manoeuvring room at the top
and bottom
o An area to allow excavations up to 2 metres deep and 30 metres long
o An embankment at least 30 metres in length
